After Dry January and Dry February, I was getting a little sour on near beers. With limited selections in-store and the gone-tomorrow seasonality and availability of the well-distributed NAs, it was getting hard to find something new.
Then along came Athletic Brewing’s Soul Sour. My first taste of a non-alcoholic sour beer, Soul Sour was a refreshing take on traditional, fruity sours.
If you like sours or fruit-laced ciders, you’ll love Soul Sour, Athletic’s tribute to Black History Month.
It’s no mistake Soul Sour is brewed with fruity hints of Blueberry, Lemon and Mango (tipping its hat to the BLM movement).
This vibrantly sour but sweet brew pours a color that’s more Wildberry Kool-Aid than beer, and tastes equally as berrylicious with a smooth, tart finish.
If you enjoy the sour, and the message and Southern Soul Food restaurant signage-inspired artwork behind it, be sure to follow the Portland-based artists behind the can’s design, Rachel Gloria and Ryan Adams.

According to ABC, all profits from this brew will be donated to @beerkulture, a non-profit whose mission is to increase diversity, inclusion & equity in the craft beer community.
Here’s to a refreshing new sour that’s rooted in history and spirit. Let’s hope they bring it back for more than one month out of the year! Cheers! 🍻
