I love fall for a number of reasons: big swells to surf, uncrowded lakes and rivers to fish for big fall brown trout, and tasty dark seasonal beers on tap.
But when I stopped drinking, I found it hard to find a good Autumn Brown near beer. The days of Rogue Hazelnut Brown or Sierra Nevada’s Tumbler were long gone.
And it’s hard to find non-alcoholic brown ales at all, let alone a good one. Whether it’s fall or not. So when I picked up Athletic Brewing Stump Jump I wondered if it would taste like a backwoods stump jumper home brew, like the name might suggest, or be a classic autumn brew you’d want to sip on a stump around the campfire.
Turns out the Stump Jump is the latter, another Athletic Brewing seasonal you should stock up on if you could get your hands on it.
Athletic’s take on a classic brown ale starts with Mild English hops ranging from crystal to midnight wheat, giving it a toasty and nutty flavor with layered notes of chocolate and molasses — a la some of your traditional favs of yesteryear.
It’s a classic brown without the booze that’ll make you leave your favorite campsite and run back to the store in search of more … or have you counting down the days until it’s back online next fall.
Here’s to being a Stump Jumper! Cheers to the return of solid brown near ales and counting down the days until the leaves fall again. 🍁 🍻
